Misc.

* The city storage yard on Cemetery Road offers bulky items disposal days on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Instead of leaving bulky trash next to neighborhood dumpsters (which is illegal), Alpine residents may take those big items — such as mattresses, coils of wire, brush, furniture, non-working water heaters, old car batteries and tires — to the storage yard located next to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center. This program is not for commercial use. Alpine residents must present a driver’s license and utility bill. Leave recyclables at the Recycling Center and bulky trash at the city yard. For more information, call Texas Disposal Systems at 432-837-0845
* Don’t throw those light bulbs in the trash! Do you have burned-out CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs? You can recycle those at the Rio Grande Electric Cooperative office, 2501 N. Hwy. 118 in Alpine. Why not toss them in the trash? These CFLs contain a small amount of mercury that, if improperly disposed of, can present a hazard to the environment. Rio Grande Electric Co-op has joined with the Environmental Protection Agency to help reduce pollution from CFL bulbs.
* Alpine Lions Club meets at noon each Tuesday at the Longhorn Steakhouse, 805 N. 5th. All Lions are encouraged to attend, and the public is welcome. For more information, call Bob Cullins at 432-837-8049 or 837-2297.
* The Alpine Farmer’s Market is open at 9 a.m. Saturdays at two locations — Old Town Plaza at 5th Street and Sul Ross, and outside Big Bend Thrift Store at 5th Street and Avenue A.
* Lap-Sit Story Time meets at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in the Junior Room of the Alpine Public Library. Children ages 5 and under will participate in stories, finger plays, singing and craft projects. For more information, call the library at 432-837-2621.
* The Friends of the Marathon Public Library meet at 11 a.m. each Wednesday for “Toddler Time” stories and crafts. The library has just received more than 100 new easy readers and board books, thanks to funding from the TexasReads program. For more information, call Carol Townsend at 432-386-4136.
* The Lobo Legacy Student Alumni Association is taking poinsettia orders for the holiday season. The cost is $11 each and available only in red. Poinsettias will arrive Dec. 1-2; add a note to that special someone for an additional $1. Emailalumni@sulross.edu or call Alumni Relations at 432-837-8697. Pay at pick-up/delivery on Dec 1-2 or if they are being delivered, send payment to Lobo Legacy Student Alumni Association, C-187, Alpine, TX 79832. Proceeds go toward the Lawrence Sullivan Ross Statue Project.
* The Christmas sign on West Gallego Avenue and S. 7th Street will be erected after the Thanksgiving holiday. This year, Sul Ross art students and local artist Charlie Bell will design and paint several images of the Spirit of Christmas that will be placed near the sign. Any business, organization or person wishing to help or contribute to the project may contact B.J. Gallego at 432-837-5650.
* Project Graduation 2011 has a new fundraiser — a metal carport with installation (20 feet by 12 feet with 6-foot legs). Mr. & Mrs. Herman Acosta of Alpine Metal Buildings donated the carport. Each ticket is $10 and only 500 tickets have been printed. Drawing will be Dec. 3 during the Brian Wilson Memorial Tournament at AHS Gym.
